PurposeThe purpose of this policy is to provide the campus community with a healthy and smoke-free environment.PolicySmoking is prohibited at all times and at all locations on The University of Alabama campus, including University-owned or leased facilities, properties, and grounds. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
The University also prohibits littering the campus with remains of any tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes. Additionally, the advertising, sale, or free sampling of tobacco products via University controlled venues, signage, and outlets is prohibited on campus, regardless of the vendor. Organizers and attendees at public events, such as conferences, meetings, public lectures, social events, cultural events, and athletic events using University-owned or leased facilities, grounds, and properties are required to abide by this University policy. Organizers of such events are responsible for communicating to attendees the policies of the University and for enforcing this policy. ExclusionsSmoking may be permitted for controlled research, educational, theatrical, or religious ceremonial purposes, with prior written approval of the Dean, Director, or Department Head responsible for the facility. Smoking may also be permitted on properties the University owns but leases or otherwise conveys an interest (e.g., an easement) to a non-University party, according to the provision of the applicable lease or agreement and with the prior approval of the Vice President of Finance and Operations.Respect and ResponsibilityThe success of this policy depends on the thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation of smokers and non-smokers. All members of the University community share in the responsibility for adhering to and enforcing this policy.
